When I say that being diagnosed with LVNC was surprising, truthfully, it was the severity of the condition that caught me off guard - Being diagnosed with LVNC. The news of a heart-related problem wasn’t completely unexpected.
Bouba Heartofagiant - 2008, 2013, 2014
Although I had been fairly healthy overall in my childhood and enjoyed an active life that involved playing and practicing sports like basketball, football, and swimming or even scuba diving, with my siblings and friends (I even played on my college basketball team), there had been disturbing signs.
Earlier in my life, if I had imagined writing a memoir, I thought it would be about the work that I do as an engineer and entrepreneur. You see, as a social entrepreneur from Mali and Senegal, my vision has been to find ways to optimize the usage, accessibility, and production of energy in Africa.
This is no small task, but as an electrical engineer by training, holding a Masters of Management degree in Technological Innovation, with over ten years of progressive experience in strategic planning, program management, and business development in the fields of energy and telecommunications, working with utilities, businesses, organizations, cities, and governments to improve people’s lives through technology and innovation, it is a task I am well-prepared to tackle.

Hi Friend: First of, apologies about this hiatus... The second half of 2019 has been busy.
As we said goodbye to 2019, it was a time to reflect on our blessings and our losses, and the beginning of the New Year a time of new aspirations and renewed enthusiasm.
I wanted to start off by expressing my gratitude for supporting and following us on our journey. It’s been quite a year with many changes and striving to keep with the twins and their big brother.
It seems like 2020 is going to be an even more fun year. My vision for this new year is 20/20 - with hope, courage, encouragement.
Thank you all for being an inspiration and motivation! Your words and images of love, hope and encouragement for our family truly make a difference.

Hi friend, family: I hope your summer is going well.
Last time, my family and I were getting ready to travel back to California, 3 years after I felt sick while there for the YALI Mandela fellowship (Read). The trip with Dez and our firstborn was amazing. We returned filled with so much gratitude and memories we’ll cherish for a long time.
Welcome to the July News and Updates. For the July letter, follow this link, otherwise, Please read on.
Friends and Family: How time flies! It’s been almost a month since our week-long trip to California in June.
Our story actually made the news in California. Check it out Here.
It was really special to meet everyone again - Dr. Xu, Dr. Subramanian, Joel, Gretchen, Tina, Paul, Gary, Liz and the team as a whole. Going back to Sutter Medical Center in Sacramento after 3 years and this time around, having our first son joined us felt both overwhelming and exhilarating.
Friends: my family and I would be visiting the Sacramento - San Francisco area between the 15 and 22 June, for a few speaking engagements and some site visits.
We’re so excited that I had to make a poster!
Mid-March, Desirée and I were invited to join this year’s ACC convention which took place in New Orleans. The goal was to showcase our life with the HeartMate3 VAD system and advocate for patients like me, to health professionals and medical organisations. It was also an opportunity to meet some of the folks leading the advancement of heart health, developing novel technologies, and therapies.
We took some time to discover NOLA, some of its food, and the music. We even went to an NBA game and also caught up with a long-time friend whom I had not seen for almost 10 years while in South Africa.

Join heartofagiant at this year's Boston Heart Walk.
We are excited to take part in the Boston Heart Walk campaign again. This year's walk would be our third year in a row. Even more special it would be because our twins would be a little over a year old, so our three sons would be walking with us. Extraordinary moments, year after year!

Healthy eating is a good idea for everyone but it is even more important for people living with a heart pump.
My pump is the Left Ventricular Assist Device or LVAD. It is the latest, Heartmate3 by Thoratec (now Abbott). So far, it’s proven to be the best in its class. I have to follow a good Heart Failure nutrition therapy which primarily involved - Limiting my salt intake and Restricting the amount of fluid I take in.
I am really stoked today. So inspired! Yesterday, my good friend Modou ran the Dakar Marathon at home (Senegal). Un vrai Jambar. And today I have a few friends who are running the B.A.A. Boston Marathon.
My boy and I along with my good friend, Bool, were at the Finish line to cheer them on!
A tough part of being ill and away from home (#Mali and #Senegal, #Africa) is that I don’t get to enjoy home food and other delicacies the way I would at home.
